The same plains.

The midrange style

Where the money goes is a choice. The quality of the safari is not.

Our midrange safaris keep everything that matters in the field — a private vehicle, a licensed and experienced guide, the right parks at the right time, and a day kept in reserve. What changes is the accommodation: comfortable, en-suite rooms and tented camps with good food and friendly teams, rather than the headline names.

It is the style we most often recommend for a first safari, for families, and for anyone who would rather have a longer trip than a more expensive one.

Sample itinerary

Six days on the northern circuit

A compact route that covers the three classic parks without rushing. Add a day in the Serengeti or Lake Manyara to slow it down further.

Day01

Arusha to Tarangire

Pick-up in Arusha after breakfast and into Tarangire by late morning. Afternoon among the baobabs and the elephant herds on the river.

Tarangire · tented camp
Day02–03

Central Serengeti

Drive through the highlands and down onto the plains. Two full days in the Seronera area — lion, leopard and cheetah country.

Serengeti · tented camp
Day04

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

A final morning drive, then back towards the highlands with a stop at Olduvai Gorge on the way.

Karatu · lodge
Day05

Ngorongoro Crater

A full morning on the crater floor, lunch by the hippo pool, then out in the afternoon.

Karatu · lodge
Day06

Return to Arusha

Drive back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro airport in time for evening flights — or on to Zanzibar.

Where you stay

Comfortable, well placed, well run

We choose midrange camps the same way we choose luxury ones: location first. A camp inside the park means earlier starts and later finishes, and less time on the road.

Expect en-suite rooms or tents, hot showers, hearty meals and teams who have hosted travellers for years. Some have pools; all have views worth sitting down for.

Questions

Before you ask

Is midrange a shared group tour?

No. Every midrange safari we plan is private to your party. If you would like to share costs with other travellers, our small-group departures are a good option — never more than six to a vehicle.

Is a midrange safari good for families?

Very. The lodges are relaxed, many have pools, and family rooms are common. We can also shorten drives for younger children.

Can we upgrade one night?

Of course. A single night in a luxury camp — often in the Serengeti — is a popular way to mix styles.
